In a big win for Chicago’s OKRP, Burger King has selected the agency as its creative agency of record following a review. OKRP beat out incumbent David who pitched with sibling Ogilvy, Dentsu’s 360i and independent Fig.

The win marks the first time a Chicago agency has been named to handle the brand’s advertising and it brings a much needed mid-western sensibility to the famed fast food giant who has seen its leadership position fall to number-three in the category behind McDonald’s and Wendy’s. OKRP has deep roots in the QSR and fast food category having created award winning work for Taco Bell and business building campaigns for Chili’s, among others.

In a statement, Burger King said OKRP was chosen “with intentions to help reintroduce the iconic brand—through campaigns and messaging that uniquely reflect its modern and relevant identity. OKRP brings an incredible depth of restaurant experience, through proven leadership in creating best-in-class category and advertising strategy, food differentiation, and creative excellence that increases brand love. Their leadership strength and culture align with the path Burger King is focused on in becoming guest-obsessed, driving relevancy and authenticity in culture, achieving business objectives and reclaiming Burger King’s status as an iconic brand.”

The emphasis on cultural relevance also speaks to OKRP’s investment and focus on diversity in its work and its staff. The agency ‘s leadership team is 50% BIPOC and 60% female and its overall staff is 36% BIPOC.

Now in its 9th year, OKRP has built its brand on practicing the High Art of Selling in crafting ideas and work that directly impacts sales. The agency believes that its work must have a commitment to sell and a retail sensibility regardless of category. It’s clients include P&G, Ace Hardward, Illinois Lottery, Cars.com, Nerds Candy, Illinois Tourism, and others.
